Why I Started a Neutral Home Decor Blog: Creating Peace Through Design

Discover the personal story behind my neutral home decor blog and why creating calm, intentional spaces can improve your mood, reduce stress, and make your home feel like a sanctuary.

For a long time, I lived my life based on what other people thought I should do.

I worked jobs because they were practical. Easy steady money. I listened to opinions about what a successful woman, mother, and business owner should be doing. But deep down, it never felt quite right.

The truth is, I’ve never wanted to spend my life working hard just to barely get by. I mean, who wants to do that? I’ve watched people earn degrees, build careers, and do everything they were told to do, yet many of them still aren’t happy.

That made me ask myself a real simple question:

What if I stopped living according to everyone else’s expectations and started paying attention to what genuinely makes me happy?

The answer brought me back to my childhood.

The Memory That Started It All

When I was young, my foster mom would take my sisters, my aunt, and me to clean vacation rentals near the beach.

To everyone else, it was work.

To me, it was heaven. Home was boring.

While we cleaned condos, beach houses, and vacation homes, I found myself completely fascinated by them. I loved seeing the different layouts, the balconies overlooking the ocean, the pools, the staircases, the colors, the knick-knacks and just the way each home felt different. Each home has a different personality.

As a child, I wasn’t thinking about cleaning.

I was dreaming. Visualizing.

I would imagine myself living there. Sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee. Walking through the rooms. Decorating spaces that felt peaceful and welcoming.

Those homes had a feeling about them.

They felt calm.

They felt intentional.

They felt like an escape from the stress of everyday life.

And that feeling stayed with me.

Home Should Feel Like a Sanctuary

As I got older, life became busy.

Work. Responsibilities. Bills. Deadlines.

But one thing never changed: my love for beautiful spaces.

I’ve always believed that your home should be your sanctuary.

When you walk through the door after a long day, your home should help you exhale.

It should be the place where you take off your shoes, put down your bags, and finally feel like yourself again.

No masks.

No pressure.

No pretending.

Just peace.

That’s why I’ve always been drawn to interior decorating, home design, and creating environments that feel calm and welcoming.

Why I Started This Blog

This blog started as a way for me to learn.

I don’t claim to know everything about interior design. I’m still learning every day.

But I wanted a space where I could explore the things I’ve always loved.

I wanted to understand why certain spaces make us feel relaxed while others leave us feeling overwhelmed.

I wanted to learn about color psychology, organization, clutter, lighting, furniture placement, and even concepts like Feng Shui. (Fun post about that coming soon)

I wanted to understand the science behind how our environments affect our mood, focus, stress levels, and overall well-being.

Most importantly, I wanted to create a place where I could share what I’m learning with others.

The Science Behind Feeling at Home

Think about the last time you visited a spa.

What did you notice?

The calming music.

The soft lighting.

The scents.

The colors.

The textures.

Everything was designed to help your nervous system relax.

That’s not an accident.

Research shows that our surroundings influence our emotions, stress levels, productivity, and even our physical health.

Our environments matter.

The spaces we spend time in affect how we think, feel, and function.

That’s one of the reasons I love studying home decor.

It’s not just about making a room look pretty.

It’s about creating a space that supports the life you want to live.

There Is No One Right Way

One thing I’ve learned is that there isn’t one perfect decorating style.

Some people love neutral spaces with soft colors, natural textures, and minimal clutter.

Others love bold colors, unique patterns, vintage finds, and creative expression.

Both are beautiful.

Both can create a sense of peace.

The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s home.

The goal is to create a space that feels like you.

A space that makes you feel comfortable, inspired, and at ease.

My Dream for the Future

I’ve always been a dreamer.

I still visualize the homes I want to create soon.

I am multiple properties and make sure I design each one with intention.

I want to create spaces where people can feel relaxed, inspired, and cared for.

The kind of places that make people walk in and say:

“OOOOOOH This is Niiiiiiiiiice.” (Yall know that Tiffany Haddish meme)

The kind of places people remember long after they’ve left.

That’s the dream.

And while I’m not there yet, every journey starts somewhere.

For me, it started with this blog.

Join Me on the Journey

This blog isn’t about perfection.

It’s about curiosity.

It’s about learning.

It’s about creating homes that support our happiness and well-being.

Through simple articles, photos, ideas, and research, I’ll continue exploring the science and beauty behind home decor, home organization, intentional living, and creating spaces that feel good to be in.

If you’ve ever dreamed of creating a home that feels like a retreat from the world, you’re in the right place.

I’m glad you now have a deeper understanding of why I started this neutral home decor blog. I hope this inspires you. I am putting together a beginner blogging guide to help you out if you are interested in learning more about creating your own digital asset.
